IN SEASON PRACTICES
Days
Monday – Friday, Occasional Saturday, Never on Sunday
Pre-practice warm up routine between school and start of practice usually consists of a captain-led run or other conditioning workout. Every athlete is expected to participate.
Hours
3:30pm to 6:30pm in the beginning until teams are divided. Once divided, practices are either 3:30-6:30 or 4:30-7:30 depending on which group you are assigned. Practices may on occasion last longer than the three hours; coach will do their best to give advanced warning. When practices are running smoothly, may end earlier than 6:30 but early release should not be expected. Over the holidays, some practices will be moved to mornings 8am-11am. See coach for details.
Holidays
Wrestling is a winter sport – we practice and compete over the winter holidays. There are some exceptions: no practice on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. On some years, New Years Day may also have no practice depending on league schedule.
Optional practices include:
- Day after thanksgiving(if a varsity wrestler NOT competing in novice tournament)
- Christmas Eve (if not invited to Sierra Classic)
OUT OF SEASON PRACTICES
Spring, Summer and Fall
Spring practices are on the opposite day of affiliated club practices. Tracy coaches recommend that you support the local Tracy Wrestling Club led by former Tracy High wrestlers who also have supported Tracy High wrestlers with fundraising, etc. If you wish to join other clubs, we think that is a great idea too, but should be in addition to supporting our local club. Many clubs are extensions of the local school program and your financial support to those programs shouldn’t come at the cost of supporting your local club. While we want all wrestlers and the clubs to succeed, our first priority as wrestlers is to support programs that support us. Examples of clubs you can join that are non-partisan:
- Tracy Wrestling Club – Primary Club
- Cardinal Wrestling Club
- BACWC
- Bay Area Titans
- Tri-Valley Elite
- Alliance Wrestling Academy
- Swamp Monsters Wrestling
- Cali-Elite
Spring practices conclude with the CA-USAW Greco state tournament.
Summer practices are in the evenings for high school wrestlers only (including incoming freshman). These practices are in the evening from July through the start of school. The exception are on the dates of the two area RTC practices (Valley RTC at Fresno State and California RTC at Stanford). See the respective RTCs for their respective schedules and qualifications to participate. The other exception is during the training and competition for nationals in Fargo, ND.
Summer practices are a critical part of your ongoing training. Many other important sports in addition to wrestling also have out of season practices during the summer such as basketball and football. Our practice schedule is designed to allow you to do both.
Fall practices are typically combined with pre-season tournaments preparation. The days and schedule will be determined by the coaches based on those participating. Note that pre-season tournaments are not CIF sanctioned events and are not a part of the mandatory competition schedule and are typically funded by the individual athlete as it is considered out of season. The coaches highly recommend as much of this type of personal preparation as possible.
All of the above is subject to change so it is important to watch the blog posts for practice details and the event calendar for competition opportunties.
